a vodka drinking competition in Russia - no way...
“Russia is traditionally an alcohol-hardened nation,” deputy prosecutor general Sergei Lubenets told a press conference in Volgodonsk, “but even by our standards, this competition was deeply irresponsible. So far there’s been one death, four others are fighting for their lives in the local hospital, and a dozen other contestants only survived because they were rushed to a clinic for an emergency stomach pump. Yet so far we’re at a complete loss to find any criminal charge that we can bring against the organisers.”
Lubenets was speaking after a vodka-drinking marathon contest in southern Russia had resulted in an epidemic of alcohol poisoning, and at least one fatality. “About fifty people took part in the event at a local food and drink shop. Each contestant was given a bucket of vodka, filled to the brim, and a half-litre glass, and told to drink an entire glassful each time a bell was sounded. By the fifth round, most of the participants had fallen over and were unconscious, but Alexander Nakonechny kept on refilling and draining his glass, and threw up his hands in celebration when he was declared the winner. The prize was ten bottles of vodka, but after taking a celebratory swig from the first bottle, he shouted out ‘I have shat myself’ and dropped dead on the spot.
“Over 40,000 Russians die each year from alcohol poisoning, and the last thing our society needs is competitions that encourage more of this ridiculous drinking. If we can find grounds to charge the organisers, then we’ll prosecute them, but let’s face it. If people are reckless enough to enter a contest than involves drinking themselves to death, it’s hard to blame anyone else for their stupidity.” (Baltic Times, 27/11/03. The Register: "I suppose there's a fair chance your 'lost my job to India' t-shirts are made in India :-)
Sorry, Harry, but you're way off the mark. In fact, all of our t-shirts are made in Indonesia by eight-year-old children working 27-hour days for a mere $10 per week. It's not much, but it's all they can afford, as the old joke goes. Boom boom!
Upon arrival in the UK, our printers - highly-skilled Albanian gypsies on day release from the local immigration centre - lovingly handpaint each and every shirt using a single badger bristle. A single garment can take up to eleven months to complete, and our enthusiastic artists welcome the tin of powdered milk they receive for every 100 shirts successfully bagged and boxed.
Finally, crates packed to bursting with top-quality apparel are carried across country by unemployed, barefoot Liverpudlians who work for no more than a can of strong lager, a packet of fags and a Lotto scratchcard a day.
Which is why we can offer you our shirts at an unbeatable 14.99 rather than the 437 they would cost were they manufactured in the UK by British workers. You see, if you add up the cost of premises, wages, benefits, taxes, etc, etc, you will see that is is simply not economically viable to keep these jobs in the UK. Nothing to do with profit. No, really. "

Griffin Technology has released SightLight, a FireWire-based light made exclusively for Apple Computer's iSight Web Camera. The SightLight slips directly onto the front of the iSight, and SightLight's Fresnel-based lens casts a direct but diffused light only to the subject directly in front of the camera, improving skin tone coloration and evening out shadows caused by inconsistent directional room lighting. Settings include On, Off and an Auto light mode, which senses the amount of ambient light and adjusts SightLight's output accordingly.

Well it's over, and Claire won. For us it has been quite an Experience. A hardware failure stretched nerves, but the right precautions were taken in the first instance and it came good. Ahh well 20 years later and how things have changed. Well some things anyway. At the Macworld 2004 expo Steve Jobs donned the old black polo-neck and jeans and wowed the religious mac faithful with a mix of design elegance (IPod Mini) very very cool software (GarageBand) and a suite of iLife '04 tools for 49 dollars. (or free with every new quack)
The iPod Mini was the darling of the show with a 4GB device going for about 250 dollars US. Garageband , an app like Acid, but with the ability to live record instruments, shipping with a thousand loops etc was awesome too. and the news that Apple is seriously going after the high end flash mp3 player market.
If I had the money I would get an iPod Mini now. Although they will only be available here in a couple of months.
Apple also lost no time exulting the beauty of quicktime streaming technology as singlehandedly enabling another webstreaming record but alas the quality was v.poor and I was not impressed at all - quicktime still walks in windowsmedia9's shadow.
Their press release below about this was the first thing out after the keynote followed by the usual gush about it being "the microsoft office for the rest of your life"
Gates must wish he was this cool (even though he is way cooler;-)
